The Final Project:

The assignment was to create a research quality web site on a topic that students in grades 6 – 9 might be assigned by a teacher. These sites should provide a depth and quality of information that would make them a viable research resource for 6th – 9th grade students. The design considerations were left open. Students were to use whatever design elements/skills they learned to create a design that supported their content.

HTML Tables: The simplest of the simple tables in HTML. Students were given the 4 pics to put in a simple 2 by 2 table. Not rocket science but enough of tables in HTML. All the files should look the same. This was just an exercise in getting the contents into the cells. In this case the contents were simply images.

HTML1: Students were given a text file with all the text for a html file but none of the tags. They were also given an image of what the web page is supposed to look like and a picture to put in the file. Their job is to put in the proper html tags to make the text and the image appear correctly on the web. This isn’t an exercise in creativity, the job is to use specific tags to arrive at a specific look.

Web Monkey #4…This takes the Web Monkey 3 file and adds an unordered list, aligned images, a horizontal rule, a title in the browser bar and maybe even a marquee.

Web Monkey #3…This takes the Web Monkey 2 file and enhances it with block quotes, line breaks and aligning text skills.

Web Monkey #2…This takes the Web Monkey 1 file and adds the bold/italics, font color and font size tags. It also adds a lovely background image and introduces the file management issues raised when you associate images with web pages.

Web Monkey #1…The very basics of HTML. The eight required tags (4 sets) plus the headlines, links, mailto & paragraph tags.

MS Word Project – Use Microsoft Word to make a basic web page. There are 3 purposes to this activity. One is to explore the strengths and weaknesses of MS Word as a tool for creating a quick and easy web page. The second is to experiment with basic design. The third is to experiment with HTML friendly design concepts.
