3/31 Notes – Solubility Rules
A. Solubility Rules
1. Solubility – def – how well a substance dissolves in water
2. Rules
a. Soluble – use (aq) to signify a soluble compound (use hand out to determine)
b. Insoluble – use (s) to signify a precipitate (solid compound – unable to dissolve in water)
c. Two aqueous solutions
If you get to products that are soluble on the product side, the reaction will not be possible, cross it out and say no reaction.
3. Examples
a. I do
What is the solid product in the following reaction: barium chloride reacts with sodium sulfate?
Write the balanced equation BaCl2 (aq)
+ Na2SO4 (aq) à BaSO4 (s) + 2 NaCl (aq)
Solid
product is barium sulfate
b. We do
Write out the following reaction, be sure to include all state symbols: Sodium hydroxide reacts with ammonium chloride.
NaOH
(aq) + NH4Cl (aq)
à NH4OH (aq) + NaCl (aq)
Both
are aqueous so NO REACTION
