2/29 Notes – Gas Stoichiometry
B. Gas Stoichiometry
1. At STP
a. Avogadro’s Principle – equal volumes have equal moles
b. PV = nRT
Find volume from 1 mole of gas at STP.
V = nRT/P = (1 mole) (0.0821) (273.15) / (1 atm)
V = 22.43 L
c. 1 mole = 22.4 L
d. Applying to stoich
1. Write the balanced equation
2. Find the number of moles of the given substance
3. Mole to mole ratio
4. Convert moles to grams or volume (depends what it is asking for)
Practice Problems
n What volume of hydrogen at STP can be produced when 6.54 g of Zn react with hydrochloric acid?

n 250 mL of hydrogen reacts with nitrogen. How many grams of nitrogen are needed? How many mL of ammonia (NH3) are produced at STP?
