Grading:

90% of your grade is based upon a possible 5 daily points.

-5 points can be earned by demonstrating the fundamentals of good choral technique including; posture, breathing, intonation, musicianship, leadership, and attitude.  This score is reserved for those demonstrating outstanding effort and improvement.

-4 points can be earned by being on task and not disrupting others.

-3 points can be earned by being on task most of the time.

-1 or 2 points can be earned by showing some effort.

-0 points will be given when a student has an unexcused absence or is removed from class for discipline reasons.

Other considerations:  One point will be deducted from the daily score when a student is tardy.  More than 7 excused absences in a semester will result in makeup work to be determined by Mr. White.

10% of your grade is based upon concert attendance and behavior.  We have four main concerts each year, and participation is required as a part of all choral classes.

-An excused absence from a concert will only be given in the following cases:

-Personal illness.  If you are home sick from school you may not attend the concert.  If you become ill after school a parent note is required.

-A funeral or death in the family.  A parent note explaining the situation is required

-Absences that will NOT be excused include, but are not limited to:

            -Work

            -Couldn’t get a ride

            -Family vacation

-All other school activities with the exception of team sports at the regional or state level.

An unexcused absence will result in a 0% score for this 10%.  This will typically result in a one letter grade drop for a quarter.

Auditions and results

Auditions will be held in the Spring for the following school year.  Placement in a specific choir will be based upon balance, blend, intonation, tone quality, leadership, and musicianship.

Audition results will be posted on the choir website after school on a specified date.

Materials

Every day students must have a pencil and their assigned choir folder.

Tardy Policy

In order to be “on time” to class, you must have your materials, be in your seat, and have no food, drink, or gum.

-1st Tardy will result in a verbal warning

-2nd Tardy will result in a five minute after school or before school detention.

-3rd Tardy will result in a thirty minute after school detention.

-4th and each consecutive tardy will result in a Friday, 3 hour detention.

Tardies will be counted from the beginning of each semester to the end.

Lettering

Students can receive a letter in choir by participation in a number of in and out of school activities.

Food, Gum, and Drink

No food, gum, or drink is allowed in the choir room at any time.  Bottled water is the only exception.  Any student bringing these things into the choir room will be asked to throw it away and will be given a tardy.

Transportation

Transportation will be provided by the district to all performances located outside of the Topeka area.  Transportation will also be provided for outside performances that take place during the school day.  Students are required to get there own transportation to all concerts and performances outside of the school day and within the Topeka area.  The Topeka area is defined as the district boundaries of Seaman, Shawnee Heights, Topeka 501, and Auburn-Washburn.
