Unit Objectives:

 

  • Students will read Lord of the Flies with the dual goals of understanding it on a literal level (the stranding of the boys) and on a symbolic level (the structures of civilization)
  • Students will identify and analyze literary methods and devices used by Golding
  • Students will work in small groups and as a class in discussing the novel’s connections to their own lives and to our modern-day world
  • Students will compose an in-class essay to analyze Golding’s literary methods in writing the novel using the Freudian criticism approach
  • Students will complete a final unit exam, demonstrating their understanding of the novel as a whole and of the literary components of the novel

 

Vocabulary:

 

allegory a story with a double meaning; a primary or surface meaning and a secondary or under-the-surface meaning; can be read at multiple levels

amplification a device in which language is used to extend or magnify or emphasize

Apollonian figure – a character who represents clarity, critical reason, and self-control

Christ figure – a literary technique used to draw an allusion between a character and the biblical Jesus Christ; a spiritual or prophetic character who parallels Jesus or other spiritual or prophetic figures

deus ex machine – an unanticipated intervener who resolves a difficult situation (from the Latin, “god out of the machine”)

Dionysian figure – a character who represents intuition, pain, orgiastic passion, dissolution of boundaries, and destruction

foil a secondary character who contrasts with a major character and highlights various facets of the main character’s personality

microcosm a small group of individuals whose behavior is typical of a larger social body encompassing it

omniscient point of view – perspective where the story is told by a narrator who knows all the facts

Promethean figure – a character who displays an inventive or innovative knack; the “fire-bringer”

symbol an object, animate or inanimate, that represents or stands for something else
