Unit Objectives:
Vocabulary:
Aside – a line directed to the audience rather than the other characters on
stage, such as “Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?”
Catharsis – the purging of emotions; the release from
tension and renewal of spirits following a performance
Dramatic Irony – when the audience knows something that the
characters in the play do not
Foreshadowing – the use of clues to hint at what will happen
later in the plot
Hubris – excessive or exaggerated pride in a
character
Oxymoron – a figure of speech in which two opposite
words are combined in one expression, such as “loving hate” or “heavy
lightness”
Paradox – a statement that is seemingly contradictory
or opposed to common sense, yet is perhaps true
Soliloquy – an unusually long speech in which a
character reveals his/her thoughts alone on stage
Sonnet – a type of poem consisting of three quatrains
and a couplet
Tragedy – type of drama in which the hero doesn’t win
