The Auburn-Washburn USD 437 School District is an independent district encompassing parts of Topeka and nearby communities in southwest Shawnee County. The district covers approximately 127 square miles, and has a student population of about 5000.

Accreditation Washburn Rural High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and has a 6A classification (indicating the largest 36 high schools) from the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Enrollment Grades 9-12 enrollment is approximately 1,650 students. Class Profile (2005) Approximately 80% of the graduates reported plans to enter four-year colleges or universities; another 9% planned to enter two-year colleges. Those students planning to enter other post-secondary training comprised 1% and less than 1% intended to enter military service. Students planning to forgo post-secondary training and directly enter the job market were 4%. Approximately 5% of graduates were undecided on their future plans. Class Periods There are seven academic periods daily. The school year lasts 38 weeks. A flexible schedule is used, which means each class is scheduled to meet from 4 to 5 periods per week. Grade Point Average/Class Rank All grades are included in the computation of the grade point average with the exception of students who receive a P for a class taken as a pass/fail option. Grade point average is figured on the traditional four-point system, except honors courses and Advanced Placement courses, which are given extra weight in the grading system. Students with incomplete (INC) grades receive 0 grade points until the course work is completed. Grading System The following point system is used: A=4, B=3, C=2 NC (no credit)=0. In the class of 2006, WRHS had three
National Merit Finalists and four Commended Scholars. Curriculum The senior high curriculum includes approximately 200 course offerings. 25 credits earned in grades 9 through 12 are required for graduation. Credits are expressed in terms of standard Carnegie units. 4 or 5 periods = .5 credit/semester. Washburn Rural High School participates in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of the College Board. AP courses in American History, American Government, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Comparative Government, English, European History, Physics, Probability and Statistics are offered.
