Academic Advising
|
Academic advising is an important service offered to our students throughout high school. Counselors work closely with students, parents, and teachers to ensure that the courses students take will help them develop the skills and knowledge to be successful in their chosen career. Washburn Rural Pre-enrollment begins in February of each year. It is at that time that students are given the Program of Studies book and enrollment materials for the coming school year. After about one week, counselors meet with students both individually and as a group in order to help them select the appropriate classes. Student course requests are then entered into the computer and a master schedule is developed based on these requests. Academic advising occurs throughout the year, and the Guidance Department encourages all of our students to sit down with his/her counselor and develop a plan to reach their academic and personal goals. If a student is not able to take a course due to the fact that the course is only offered at times that the student must take another class, we always encourage them to try to take the course the following year. Sometimes classes will close either because there was not sufficient enrollment demand to justify keeping the class. Although the number of sections available in a particular class is determined by the initial requests of students, some classes close in May due to changes students make in their schedule. Through careful planning and use of Guidance services, all students should be able to take the courses that they want and need in order to reach their goals upon graduation from high school. |
